Catch the movie that flew over the fence and into the hearts of millions of cheering fans! It's Disney's ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD, the feel-good film of the year about a young boy praying for a father -- and a struggling baseball team praying for a pennant. Danny Glover plays George Knox, the frustrated coach of the California Angels, a ragtag team of major-league misfits who are down on their luck. But things begin to look up when 11-year-old Roger, their biggest fan, starts giving Knox some winning tips from a real live angel named Al (Christopher Lloyd). The team miraculously climbs back into the pennant race ... all the while learning to believe in themselves. With its heavenly mix of outrageous comedy, dazzling special effects, and amazing baseball action, Disney's ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD is an entertainment home run for the whole family!

This effects-heavy, 1994 remake of the 1951 film starring Janet Leigh and Keenan Wynn is all computer-generated pizzazz, with none of the charm or imagination of the original. Aimed squarely at children this time, the story focuses on a boy who gets some divine intervention on behalf of his favorite ball club. Christopher Lloyd plays the head angel, and Danny Glover is good as the team's manager, but the real star of the film--for better or worse--is the software that makes a glowing, celestial presence on the field seem real. --Tom Keogh

Too long, true, too talky, true, but worth seeing once....

Rating: 3
If, that is, you are a Civil War Buff. "Gettysburg" is a much superior film, but "Gods and Generals" has gems in it also. Rent it, watch a little at a time, enjoy the fine actors coping with an overloaded script.

The Civil War at its most boring.....

Rating: 2
I enjoy Civil War movies. I've read more books on this war than I can possibly count. I've spoken with The Late Shelby Foote, David Stroud and a number of other prominant Civil War writers. So the subject matter was flat out interesting. I was excited to see this movie. Especially after Gettysburg. This movie, however, paled in comparison to just about every movie I've ever seen on this subject. It was boring, poorly edited and the dialog was contrived and unbelievable, not to mention unmotivated. You're in a WAR! That's your motivation!

The ensemble cast includes giants such as Jeff Daniels and Robert Duvall. But the casting of several others failed to meet the mastery that was Gettysburg.

This movie was a monumental failure and one that is not likely to be repeated.

This has to be the best movie i ever saw on the civil war. The acting and costumes were superb. This movie cover's the civil war up to Gettysburg.

The same director made the movie Gettysburg. Tho not as great as this movie, Still very good. Dont miss either. Amazon sells both movies as a pack at a discount.

Letterboxing needs to be banned, period.

Rating: 2
I'll never understand why good movies seem to come out on DVD so severely letterboxed that it's actually unpleasant to watch them; the average household doesn't have theatre-ratio TV screens, and for those thickheaded TV manufacturers who are trying to force that onto the public as the standard---well, the sooner we boycott such nonsense, the better. You lose so much of the image size, you might as well be watching on an old Dumont or something. That's the case with "Gods and Generals" in particular---an interesting and well-done production which is pathetically 50% black bar and 50% viewable area. The fact of the matter is, most of us can't afford a "special" TV to watch---a fact that one would think would be readily apparent to the dunces who release these absurdly-squashed films to the public. If I could, I'd buy a full-screen version of this film; failing that, I'll try to record it next time it's on cable. My suggestion: DON'T BUY IT. It will look like crap unless you're rich enough to have a special large-screen theatre-ratio TV in your home---which is maybe 2% of the population in this country.

God Help Us.

Rating: 2
My wife and I both enjoyed "Gettysburg" and looked forward to watching "Gods and Generals". It was one of the worst films we've watched in years. To be fair, we did endure the whole thing. They should have re-named it "The Start of the Civil War as Seen by the South". This film portrays the generals from the south as religious zealots (especially Jackson) and the generals from the north as pompous idiots. This may be historically accurate but most of the film's focus wasted time on just one of these zealots: "Stonewall" Jackson. It was painful watching this delusional idiot who was no better than the religious terrorists we face today. The highlight of the film was when Jackson was accidentally killed by his own men. There is justice in the world after all. There were a few good scenes, such as when a lone soldier from each side greeted the other from across the river. However, I would have liked to have seen a more balanced account of this part of the Civil War without all of the religious dogma. This review is short since I don't want to waste any more time on this film.

Stories As Old As Man Himself .

Rating: 5
I knew what I was getting because I have been watching these stories on TV for years, the joy of buying the DVD's is that I can watch them commercial free, and enjoy them now at my schedule not TV sponsers. The only one that surprised me was Samson and Delilah, I had never seen this version before, and I admit I enjoyed this more than past versions. Overall the quality of the DVDS are good, and if you enjoy bibical stories, which I have since being a child, I would recommend them, I never get tired of the stories.

A worthy edition to the Bible series / faithful adaptation to the Bible.

Rating: 4
This movie is a faithful adaptation from the biblical account of David and it gives a positive portrait of him.

A. The acting

Nathaniel Parker does a commendable job of portraying David as a reverent yet flawed servant of God. There is an interesting contrast in the earlier David versus the latter David. The earlier David was very focussed on God and was very assertive and focussed. The latter David, while dependent upon God, was hesitant about his actions, prone to failures and needed constant encouragement.

Sheryl Lee was very believable (and beautiful) as Bathsheba -- as this movie portrays her, she is David's favorite wife and constant source of encouragement in his latter years. She is constantly at David's side (during the 2nd half of the movie).

Jonathan Pryce played the role of Saul as a tragic man who was rejected by God and who could not escape his doom. Saul's tragic end at the hand of the Philistines (along with his sons) was very heartbreaking to watch.

Leonard Nimoy does a great job of portraying the godly prophet Samuel. Franco Nero is very believable as the loyal prophet Nathan.

The actor who played Joab looked way too old to be David's nephew. He did a great job but he looked like David's uncle. Joab is portrayed in a much more positive light in this film than in the biblical account, which describes him as a power hungry and ruthless man.

B. The account of David

This film is the most complete account of David captured on film. This film is the only one on David that shows David's rescue of his wife Abigail from the Amalekites, Absalom's hatred toward David and his conspiracy toward David / the rise and fall of Absalom, Amnon's rape of Tamar, and God's covenant promise to David regarding his kingdom and his future descendants who will build the temple.

One word of caution for family viewers: there are some scenes in this movie that might be too intense for younger viewers: a lot of people get stabbed in the battle scenes, several people commit suicide (Saul, Ahithophel), and the witch at Endor is pretty scary looking as she conjures up the spirit "Samuel".

C. What could have been improved

a) The close relationship between Jonathan and David could have been better depicted. In this film, David's friendship with Jonathan seems more detached. In the Bible, David describes his friendship with Jonathan as surpassing that of the love of women.

b) The fight between David and Goliath could have been better portrayed. Goliath was a towering giant -- the Goliath in this movie was just a tad taller than David (and bears somewhat of a resemblance to Sylvester Stallone). Also, Goliath met David with his armor bearer -- this movie had Goliath meet David alone. This movie shows Goliath throwing a rough stone at David, which David then uses to strike Goliath with his sling. In the biblical account, David carefully chooses 5 smooth stones to bring with him to the battle.

The fight between David and Goliath was a bit cheesy in the acting. However, to its credit, this movie shows David telling Goliath that he came to Goliath not with spear and sword but in the name of the Lord of Hosts. David tells Goliath he will strike him down so the whole world will know there is a God in Israel. I enjoyed that part.

c) The Absalom character sometimes seemed more like a buffoon than a real threat to David.

Conclusion:

In spite of this, I thought this movie was a very good adaptation of the biblical description of David. It made me want to read the biblical account all over again. It is a very worthy edition to the Bible series collection, and it is one of the better movies on King David on film. It is much more accurate than the dreadful "King David" with Richard Gere.

Another Good One.

Rating: 4
The story of King David is a natural for cinematic production and there have been many attempts. This is another of the good ones which is to be expected since TNT's Bible collection has set a high standard.

This account takes a long view, from the time when David was a shepherd boy all the way through the pinnacle of power. Like the scriptural story itself, David is portrayed as a good, but not perfect man. The warts are in there as well. David does some things that are not too admirable.

A big part of this production is David's friendship with Jonathan, the son of the prior king. In his relations with Saul, Jonathan and even his faithless wife, David keeps the faith.

It is a good but not perfect story that is well done.

I purchase this set for my brother,He once mentioned how he would like to have the bible in movie format, so he could understand them better. He is a visual Person as well as I am so i decided to buy this set. Hoping they would be close to Biblical Scriptures. and he loved them and on weekends i see his friends coming over to watch the movies. The stories make it easier to understand the bible because now there is a picture to go along with.

This is definitely one of the best Bible story collections ever done, with excellent acting and drama, full of life and not bland or plain, like many Bible story movies have been. Awesome job.

Motivational movie!.

Rating: 5
True story. The Ron Clark Story is about a teacher who attempts and finally learns "how to teach" troubled sixth graders "in the hood." Excellent example of how it is possible to reach troubled children by being creative in the teaching process. This is an example of how to give children hope to strive for higher levels of achievement, while overcoming their hopelessness and poor self-esteem.

The Ron Clark Story.

Rating: 5
The movie is great and very motivating! I showed it to my 5th graders and loved it! They even felt bad for the Teacher. Some could even identify themselves with some of the characters. They were also a rough group. They have toned down a little. Got them to kind of see themselves and think about their behaviours.

Not another sappy school story!.

Rating: 4
Everyone who is teaching or planning to teach needs to watch this movie and read Clark's books. The movie is inspirational and presents excellent examples of the dedication seen in many teachers. It may be a little over the top, but it certainly demonstrates that "kids don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

I love you Edie....

Rating: 5
I've watched Grey Gardens so many times Big Edie and Little Edie are friends of mine. If I had of lived in the Hamptoms back in the 70's I would have been a frequent visitor in their home. I would have brought little Edie loaves of Wonder Bread to feed her racoons. I would have helped Edie give the kitties their luncheon. I would have eaten and enjoyed an ear of corn prepared by Big Edie. This documentary is the closest I can now come to being around these two fascinating women.

Imagine Little Edie Beale was around in today's world of instant fame and easy celebrity; she would be my first choice to replace Rosie O'Donnell on "The View". Just imagine Edie's "revolutionary" outfits of the day next to Barbraa Walters reserved fashion sense. Of course Bill O'Reily would want to have her on his show; he would have asked her opinion on topics but she would have probably managed to talk him down. She is such a staunch woman.

S-T-A-U-N-C-H

Watch this movie. Watch it again. It's the most amazing documentary I have ever seen.

And Edie: You look fabulous!
