| Good news, everyone, the third DVD volume of Futurama is just as funny as ever--irreverent, boundlessly inventive, warmhearted, and chock-full of in-jokes, sight gags, and fleeting references to all manner of pop-culture icons and obscure genre classics. In fact, if the show has a problem, it's that it's all so lovingly crafted that scarcely a frame goes by without something both funny and clever going on: when a horse wins a race by a quantum fraction, Prof. Farnsworth fulminates, "You changed the result by observing it!" Recurring minor characters (Elzar the chef, the robot mafia, the mutants in the sewers) pop up unexpectedly throughout, providing another wink to dedicated fans; like Red Dwarf, this is a show that loves the genre it sets out to spoof. Shame, then, that the show has had a troubled broadcast history and never quite found the mainstream appeal of its stablemate The Simpsons. Fry and the Planet Express team find themselves stranded on a planet of unfeasibly large women ("Amazon Women in the Mood"), standing in for psychotic Robo-Santa ("A Tale of Two Santas", with John Goodman reprising his evil robot), and variously falling in love with each other and sundry other humans, aliens, man-bots, fem-bots, virtual reality constructs, and even the Planet Express ship itself. Futurama, Vol. 3 comprises 22 episodes on four discs. As with previous DVD sets, the animated menus are a treat, and there's a selection of bonus features including deleted scenes, storyboards, commentaries on every episode, animatics, "How to draw" tips, and more. Sheer heaven. --Mark Walker

"One of my favorite seasons!".
Rating: 5
I bought this for my wife, she's a buffy fanatic. There were no problems with scratches. She watched all of it in a weekend! The season is based around a uni campus instead of the high school. Its a really unique season and well worth it if your a buffy fan!

Buffy's least coherent season.
Rating: 4
I consider Buffy season 2 its least consistent season, but four is easily its least coherent. It transitions between the Scoobies in high school and post-school, between Jonathon the nerd and Jonathan the villain, and between Faith the villain and Faith the hero, but these stories don't span the entire year. There are fewer characters in every episode of this season (only the core four) than in all others. Many of the best episodes feature Oz, Faith, and Jonathan, but they seem more like epilogues to the high school years and prologues to the later ones because these characters are only in a few episodes. It lacks a central theme: college is not the focal point of this season the way high school was in the early years, nor is it about family like the fifth season or self-destruction like the sixth.
This is also the lightest season of Buffy: while most seasons deal with death or likable characters going bad, the only sad thing that takes place in this entire year is Oz' departure. The strange thing about Joss Whedon shows is that they are often funnier when they are dark, so this season is neither as humorous nor as heartbreaking as the second, third, and fifth seasons.
And yet there's a tremendous amount to like about this season. Joss Whedon's writing talents became evident in season 2, but it's not until the fourth season that his direction becomes equally important. With the silent "Hush" and the all-dream "Restless", Whedon became the first television creator since David Lynch whose direction stood out as much as a great movie director's.
I prefer the way Oz was handled this year than in season three: rather than being in the entire season but always staying in the background, he's in a third of this year but is the star of two of the episodes. Giles' mid-life crisis this year is fun as well, as he takes up alcohol and music as he no longer has a job as a librarian or watcher.
One of the main problems the writers faced was balancing the show's past with exploiting the potential of college. The first two episodes capture the bewilderment of the first weeks of college wonderfully, but feel disconnected from the rest of the show, as if they were the pilot of a brand new series. In the third episode Spike, Anya, and Harmony are reintroduced and it starts to feel more like Buffy, but there's hardly any college humor from this point on. All of the funniest characters (Xander, Spike, Giles and Anya) have no connection to the university, which is a stark contrast from the first three seasons when everyone but Angel was a high school student or employee.
This season also receives some flack for The Initiative plot, which is an X-Files-ish sci-fi conspiracy that's very different from the other seasonal plots and not terribly great. I think it receives too much of the blame for this season's shortcomings, as season 2 is the only season of the show where the plot was the central force. Joss Whedon, who had written most of season 2's plot and a little of season 3's, doesn't even touch this one, making it obvious that it is of little importance. I still find Adam more interesting than the first season's Mayor and the last year's First Evil, and the episode where he is defeated is Buffy at it's Hollywood action best.
The vast majority of these episodes are good (I recommend skipping the infamous "Beer Bad", and a few of them are downright classics, but there is barely any connecting thread uniting these episodes. Luckily the remaining seasons will build on the foundation led by season four and make it clear that these episodes were important. You shouldn't skip season four, nor should you want to.
NOTE: Even if you have no desire to watch the "Angel" spinoff, you should at least watch its 18th and 19th episodes, which wrap up this year's "Faith" story arc wonderfully.

Joss Whedon's favorite season..
Rating: 5
Before I say anything else, I will say that I do not own the slim set I own the original bulky version. I will give some people advice right now, if you do not own any of the buffy season's on DVD get the slim version because it helps your DVD's from getting damaged being that all six discs come in three silm DVD cases or just buy all seven seasons super pack might cost more money but it's worth it, if you don't any of the seasons and if you are superfan like I am. I have heard some mixed reviews about the fourth season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This was a challenging year to say the least for both the characters on the series and for Joss Whedon and company. Not only did Joss and his team have to work on Buffy The Vampire Slayer but they also had to work on its new spinoff Angel which leaves the original series and it's spinoff kind of missing something. But that slowly goes away as the episodes progress. One thing that is the main arc "some people would argue did it even have an arc" is that college is a period of change. Some good, some bad, some that you didn't see coming. I have find it interesting that the thing that everybody was complaining about, meaning most of my fellow Joss Whedon loving univirse fans saying things like "Why is everyone changing and why are there more stand alone episodes?" That was the point that college was about experiencing new things and realizing that some things happen very quickly and you get over them and some things stick around for a while. One of the things that interesting through this entire season is the fact that additions and subtraction of cast members. Which you'll see by the changing title sequences this season. Another thing that's interesting is the fact that the main villian does not arrive until episode 13 which is late for a Buffy The Vampire Slayer season. Some episodes to look out for as really some of the best of the series "Hush", "Restless", and "Who Am I" all written and directed by Joss Whedon. And just for you factoid nuts out there "Hush" and "Restless" are two of Joss favorite Buffy The Vampire Slayer episodes ever. The special features are very good in this package. The audio commentaries can be boring for those of who have no interest in learning about how these episodes were made. So, if you're looking for a Will Ferrell commentary you're not going to find it here. The featurettes are probably the best special feature in particular the season overview. Lastly, Joss Whedon said "That was probably our best season episode by episode". It has been almost four years since Buffy The Vampire Slayer had it's last episode on the now extinct UPN network and looking back on all seven season he is probably right. But if you're looking for a season that has a very strong arc see season five and season seven.

Buffy: The College Season.
Rating: 4
Season Four is Buffy at college and it's the first time we get to see Harmony as a vampire (in "The Harsh Light Of Day"). We get to see Eliza Dushku again as Faith in "This Year's Girl" and as Buffy in "Who Are You?" (I also enjoy watching her on the DVD sets of "Tru Calling".)And I get to see my sister's friend, Conor O'Farrell in his appearances in "New Moon Rising" and "Primeval". This season includes the classic episode "Hush" and we get a glimpse of the relationship between Spike and Buffy in future seasons when they become engaged because of a spell cast by Willow in "Something Blue". Buffy The Vampire Slayer becomes Buffy the Cavewoman in "Beer Bad". The last episode, "Restless" shows Adam, the Frankenstein creature in this season without all the makeup and gizmos. The dream sequences in this episode are as disjointed as dreams can get. Pass the cheese.

They can't have 2 black men as supporting actors..
Rating: 4
I must say that the idea of releasing just a few episodes of 24 so that people who missed the shows and didn't record them is a great $$$ idea.
Once again suspention of disbelief is the key to enjoying this series. I like how Jack is tortured for two years and in two hours is all right. My uncle was in Hanoi Hilton for six months, and I honestly don't know if he has fully recovered. It certainly took him longer than a couple of hours. I certainly wouldn't give a man like that a gun and put him on a high security job. Oops, I lapsed into rational thought.
Aside from that, the rest of the eipsodes are great. It is going to be hard for me to like Jack now or think that he is a 'hero' for killing Curtis. I have to agree that the Yasser Arafat wannabe deserved a bullet from the man who's men he killed. I guess there's not enough room on the show for two black men. The new President better watch his back and make sure that CTU only hires white guys.
Since I have to wait until the rest of the DVD's are out to watch the other episodes, my hope is that Kim will return to the show only to be killed. I would have given this 5 stars if it had happened in the first 4 hours!

24 - When can l buy the next one....
Rating: 5
Wow, what a start to season 6. I came late to 24 - I actually watched Season 1 through 5 in the space of around 6 weeks - I did not leave my home except to work! Now season 6 is playing on TV in England but it is about 15 hours in so l cant catch up and the next season does not go on sale in the UK till November. All in all these four episodes, whilst allieviating my withdrawals from 24 also added to them - I NEED TO SEE THE REST OF THE SEASON!

Original and well-crafted series that is genuinely funny.
Rating: 5
I tend to be skeptical of all hype, whether about sports figures or commercial products or film reviews, but particularly about "critically acclaimed" TV series (comedies especially, since I am admittedly not an easy laugh). Most of these so-called "original" and "brilliant" shows are almost invariably formulaic, predictable, unimaginative, unoriginal, and uninteresting mediocrity that are predictably shilled by a largely conformist and toadying group of "entertainment critics" who often pander to the networks' program marketing and who themselves probably have never actually written a script, (and for the most part don't have a clue what is in fact good), but strive to maintain their credentials by raving about the "right" shows in a scarcely veiled act of symbiosis between the networks and the mainstream outlets where these critics/shills ply their dubious trade. Far too often, something unique or original or unorthodox meets with disdain or indifference, while meritless offal is undeservedly touted. But once in a while, there is a program that critics and audiences (not just the really stupid ones that watch "reality" shows) all can laud. MY NAME IS EARL is one such show.
I first saw this show inadvertently, on the big TV screens at the gym. I started laughing out loud within just a few minutes. This influenced me to watch more episodes, which in turn convinced the Mrs. and myself to buy the first season, which we missed in its original broadcast. After having seen each episode of the first season, I don't think there is a bad or weak one in the whole series, although there are some that do stand out as favorites.
For those few who might not be familiar with the show, it's about an inveterate ne'er-do-well named Earl Hickey (Jason Lee) who continues his life of petty theft and mayhem until one day winning a big prize from a scratch-off lotto ticket, which he loses moments later in a bizarre accident. While in the hospital, Earl comes to the conclusion that his poor quality of life - in particular his painful loss of fortune - is a result of karmic forces aligned against him. To regain some measure of good fortune, he begins a determined quest to live a better life and to try and right some of the wrongs he has done. No sooner does he begin this quest than his winning ticket is miraculously returned to him by the providential wind, thereby providing the funds for his mission.
The show's premise is both creative and interesting, in addition to being very well-written. The stories are an imaginative foray into different subplots which cleverly ties the various elements together in an ending which is not only satisfying, but also adroit.
The biggest pleasant surprise is the wonderful effectiveness of the cast. I was not an especially big fan of Jason Lee (I don't like Kevin Smith films), but he is so good in the lead role (capturing the clumsy but earnest intentions and hamheaded determination of the character), that it is difficult to imagine anybody else being able to play that role with any comparable skill. The other biggest surprise was Jaime Pressly, whose acting career has largely consisted of straight-to-video or late-night cable low budget B- movies. Though she had been making the transition towards comedies, she excels in her role of Joy (Earl's ex-wife and occasional nemesis). She has really hit the mark in terms of her comic timing, delivery, and expressions. The rest of the main cast includes Ethan Suplee, a capable journeyman character actor with a surprisingly long and diverse resume' of roles, plays Earl's simple but mostly good-natured brother Randy; Eddie Steeples plays Darnell (aka Crabman), Joy's laid-back new husband (she divorced Earl while he was in traction in the hospital) who Earl still remains friends with; the scorching hot Nadine Velasquez (yummy!) plays Catalina, the paradoxically worldly yet naive (and highly sexy) maid who works at the rundown motel where Earl and Randy live. Also, she's really attractive. Add to this a wealth of talented and familiar guest appearances and you have the right crew for this remarkable vessel.
The show works for a variety of reasons, and all factors not only work well but exceptionally so. Of all the different types of entertainment viewing options (films and/or TV), comedies are usually first preference, although again I tend to be a tough audience. In addition to the laugh-out-loud humor, it is very satisfying to see a show about someone trying to redeem himself and help others WITHOUT ALL THE SANCTIMONY AND SELF-ADULATION that other programs with less merit would purport to have. It has become a staple of entertainment for our family, and countless others. The only thing I enjoy more than watching the episodes are watching them with family and friends and seeing the enjoyment they also have in watching it. There is no show (or anything for that matter) that everyone will like, but I am confident that this show will be received favorably by those looking for great humor, good writing, engaging stories, likable (if somewhat dysfunctional) characters, and a positive message.

Add This DVD to your list of Great TV Shows whose DVDs come with Great Extras.
Rating: 5
A lot of TV shows don't put much effort into their extras packages (some like Curb Your Enthusiasm from the second season on give you none at all) but those in charge of putting My Name is Earl on DVD have done a very nice job indeed! Aside from the documentaries, blooper reel, audio commentaries and deleted scenes they've given the purchaser a whole new episode to watch. Not just any episode either, no the Bad Karma episode lets us see what would have happened if Earl made a list to get vengeance on everyone who had ever wronged him. It's hilarious and also has Jason Lee playing a second character (female prostitute) which you see him getting his moustache shaved off and done up for at the end of the documentary Making Things Right.
This is definitely the best show to have appeared on TV recently. It's fresh, it's original and very, very funny! Buy it! Would highly recommend Scrubs as well for shows that go above and beyond for their fans with their DVD extras.

Excellent set and excellent show.
Rating: 5
Yes, I'm still hooked on Buffy, even after so long, enough so that I'm scrounging up money to buy the DVDs-- and it's absolutely worth it. The quality's excellent, and the commentary on some of the episodes is worth it alone.
Season Three is of course excellent, as is the rest of the show, especially since this season features the other Slayer, Faith, one of my favorite characters. Established, mainstream relationships on TV shows in particular tend to bore me, but the continuation of the Angel/Buffy plotline in this season is, thanks to the genius of Joss, the writers, and the actors, painfully accurate to life, and exquisite. All other relationships, romantic and not (like Buffy and Giles, Oz and Willow, even the evil Mayor and Faith), reach the same level, which is a great feat on a show that's supposedly just about vampires and demons. The episode "The Wish" is in S3, too, which is the now-infamous alternate universe established by the writers-- it's, in my opinion, one of the best episodes in all of Buffy.
The special effects this season are a little silly, as they're still somewhat low-budget this early on, but the acting more than makes up for it. It's brilliant, and I'd more than recommend it.

Buffy finally gains some consistency.
Rating: 5
Buffy's third season is the first season of the show to be consistently good - the worst episode ("Gingerbread"), is perfectly decent. The show's core writing staff have joined by this point, so there's no need to rely on the mediocre writers of the first two years.
Season 3 is also the only season of the show that starts dark and becomes lighter. The first third of the season does a fantastic job of exploring the emotional effects of season 2's devastating finale, which distinguished Buffy from most series which would have been eager to get into the regular flow of things. Because the character's situation has actually become better by the end of the year (Angel comes back, and the Scoobies' friendships heal), the finale lacks the power of "Becoming, Part Two" and "The Gift," and it's not as unconventional and interesting as "Restless," which is unfortunate because this season is arguably the show's best.
The central villains of season 3 are Faith and the Mayor, who are to father-daughter relationships what Spike and Drusilla were to husbands-and-wives. These two characters genuinely care for each other and are extremely likable because of it. Eliza Dushku and Harry Groener's performances are magnificent, but their connection to the Scoobies is less powerful than Angel's in season 2. Many have pointed out that they serve as a dark parallel to Buffy and Giles, but that's simply not as troubling as when the hero's lover killed the charming Jenny Calendar.
Season 3 was the beginning of a trend in Buffy seasons for the plot episodes to be good, but not the best the show had to offer (the only exception is season five's finale "The Gift"). The best episodes here are Lover's Walk, The Zeppo, and Doppelgangland, humorous episodes that were enormously important to the characters of Spike, Xander, and Willow.
Season 3 and 5 are the only two seasons of the show with no bad episodes, and season 3's Faith and the Mayor are certainly better villains than 5's Glory. There are two reasons season 3 is only my second favorite, however: Angel and Oz. Angel returns in season 3, but it's obvious he cannot be Buffy's lover after the events of last season. As he is neither the villain nor the romantic lead this season, it feels like he is simply being used to advertise next year's "Angel" spin-off.
Oz, on the other hand, is a great character who SHOULD have been fun here. This is the season he is in the most episodes of. Unfortunately, he fades into the background for most of the season. None of these episodes focus on him, the way season 2's "Phases" and season 4's "Wild at Heart" do.
Season 3 isn't a great season for every character like 5, but it still contains fantastic episodes, particularly for Xander, Cordelia and Willow.

Why the reduction in size? Why the slim?? I liked the hefty, ya know, the set that seemed to unfold ferever? Before ya go, however, I gotta find out: Will the kids EVER graduate from high school?? Will Willow finally expirience true love?? What happens to that Angel fella and doesn't anybody notice he's way too old fer her?? And, what's wrong with that Faith chick, like yeah man and didn't I see her on a failed series on Fox (where else?) a couple'a years ago?? Yeah, and, what IS up with the slim, anyway?? And does that Xander doofus ever nail a chick?? No WAY, man!!
The answer to these and many more profound questions are contained herein.
Yo, dude, where'd ya put the Ring-Dings? I can't watch Buffy without 'em, or at least some cheetoes. If I were a Ding-Dong, man, where would I be right now?? Where's tha last brew...Watch out, man, Buffy like, watch out!! HEY!! Why'd ya go an'let the dog in?? I told ya, dude...my parents don't want tha dog down here in the basement. Ohhhhh, noooooooooo!

The Saddest Cartoon Episode EVER; Jurassic Bark.
Rating: 5
I'll keep this short and sweet; the Season 4 Futurama episode, 'Jurassic Bark' is without a doubt the saddest cartoon I've ever seen. I'm a 27 year old male and upon seeing this episode, I broke down and cried. I won't hide that.
The episode deals with Fry finding fossilized remains of his puppy, Seymour. He and Seymour buddied around for three years and become Fry's best friend (Even learning how to bark-sing Fry's favorite song, 'Walking on Sunshine'.)
In the future Fry finds the remains of his once best friend and struggles with the moral implications of reviving Seymour in clone form (with all memories intact.) Upon finding out Seymour died when he was 15 and not 3 when Fry had left, Fry decides not to revive him, stating that Seymour must have lived a full life after Fry left and perhaps even forgot all about him.
At the end of the cartoon, we learn the truth; that Seymour had waited those 12 remaining years outside the pizza house for Fry to return. The last scene shows the 15 year old dog lay down and close his eyes.
It's an amazing episode that I honestly cannot see a second time. I own this 4th season boxed set and set that DVD aside :)

Bittersweet.
Rating: 5
The fourth, and last, season of Simpsons creator Matt Groening's Futurama is a bittersweet end to a frequently hilarious animated series. In these episodes, Leela discovers her parents, Fry finds the fossilized remains of his old pet dog, Kif gets pregnant, Bender gets a sex change (yes, you read that right), and Fry attempts to outwit the Robo Devil in the final episode. Unlike the previous seasons, there aren't as many laugh out loud moments in this collection, but it has it's share of surprisingly poignant moments that set it apart from other prime time animated comedies. One great episode included here though is "Where No Fan Has Gone Before", which features the voice talents of William Shatner and the rest of the original Star Trek cast. This episode is reason enough to pick this season set up alone, especially if you are a Star Trek fan. Like the previous seasons, the fourth season of Futurama featured many sci-fi parodies and in-jokes, which easily flew over many viewer's heads, but when they hit the mark, the show is at it's best. Though Fox finally pulled the plug on Futurama, as well as Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy, both shows were reborn on Cartoon Network's late night Adult Swim lineup. Staggering DVD sales and Adult Swim ratings spelled a comeback for Family Guy, and it appears the same thing is happening to Futurama as a DVD movie is on the way, and the show itself may return from the dead as well. Even if those plans go under, Futurama still went out on top, and it still remains one of the smartest animated comedies ever produced.

Highly Quotable.

This extremely clever series didn't miss a step in its fourth season, and is full of reasonably intelligent (and not overly preachy) satire and appropriately silly buffoonery that is sure to entertain, even if you are a boring sycophant (I have proof of this!)

There really is no justice in the world when a sitcom like this gets cancelled after four episodes--four SUPERB episodes. What was Fox thinking? Alas, its appearance on DVD is some comfort. Commercial TV is full of head-scratching decisions, and this is one of them. But now's your chance: Get the DVD and enjoy what could have been! The cast is uniformly good, the music only adds to the quirkiness and the plots are hilarious. And of course, Bradley Cooper makes a perfect lead.

Brilliant comedy that was never given a chance.

It's a real crime that Fox never let this brilliant comedy (they only aired 4 of 13 episodes) find an audience. Like "Arrested Development," it was canned way before its time. Bradley Cooper leads an ensemble cast as a fallen chef who is given a second (or last) chance to prove himself. He gathers a rag tag team and they mix like oil and water with the wait staff, with plenty of laughs and sexual tension thrown in. Some of the best episodes include "Rabbit Test," where today's special arrives alive; "Teddy Takes Off," where the temperamental fish guy wants recognition for his recipes; and the hilarious "French Fight," featuring Cooper's former "Alias" co-star as a rival chef who steals a recipe and starts a war. The casting is great, the writing witty, and the premise is fresh and far more entertaining than all the reality restaurant shows combined.
Extras include a tour of the Nolita restaurant set and interviews with some of the cast who also seem dumbstruck as to why the show was canceled.
Yep, they canceled this and yet junk shows like "Fact of Life" and "Full House" managed to stay on nearly a decade. And God help us, both live on in reruns.

great series.

I wish they had continued the show. It is funny to see the similarities from the show and actual restaurant work.

This is MUST SEE TV!.

Name one FOX half hour comedy that has been a hit in recent years -- cartoons excluded. If "Kitchen Confidential" aired on NBC, it would have at least been a decent hit -- if not a huge one. This show would have been perfecd for NBC's Thursday's. Instead, it aired on FOX. There audience just isn't sophisticated enough to enjoy a show like this.
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. The show is funny. It depicts the ongoings of the restaurant business in (sort of) a realistic way... more so than any other series. The acting is well done.
I highly recommend this DVD.

good show, bad packaging.

I own several seasons of MASH and the way they packaged them is terrible. Once you open it you can't get it back in right. Every set is like this. MASH was and is a good show and my kids love it, but the packaging is very annoying.

I have grown up watching these shows. I have always enjoyed watching these shows no matter who is on them, from Colonial Blake or Colonial Potter, Trapper or BJ. They all are entertaining to me.

Finally Hawkeye and the entire cast go home. This was a great series. Hope to see some sort of reunion set in the present. Great addition to any collection

The third season of Futurama only further improves upon the sci-fi spoofing comic hilarity set up by the previous seasons of Matt Groening's show. Episodes this season find Fry (voiced by Billy West) overridden with parasites, which makes him irresistible to Leela (voiced by Married...With Children's Katey Sagal), drunken, klepto robot Bender becomes the new Santa Claus after the original evil robot Santa (John Goodman) is frozen. In one of the series' best episodes, "The Luck of the Fryish", Fry learns that his brother Yancy not only accomplished some great feats, but he stole his name as well as his trasured and prized seven leaf clover. Also this season, Bender is in fine form in many episodes as he thinks he's a penguin, and falls in love later on before becoming the Pharoah of another planet. We even get a bit of a shocker when we learn the truth about Leela's pet Nibbler, and the role that he had played in Fry's mishap trip into the future in "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid". Beck stops by as well in "Bendin' in the Wind" as he and Bender go out on tour. All in all, the episodes found on these discs are every bit as enjoyable as you would come to expect from the brilliantly funny series, with the only downside being that there was one more season of episodes to come before the show met it's demise.

Yes, its totally worth it!.

Trust me when I say this, you will fall in love! With Bender, a trash talking robot who really just wants to be loved...with Frye, a victim of unrequited love...with Leela, a one eyed space pilot who never met her parents...and the rest of the crew. I can't wait for the new season to come out in 2008! The characters are real, the plots are engrossing, and the laughs just keep on coming!
